Nursing Home Transition and Diversion Waiver

The Center for Independence of the Disabled in New York, Inc. ("CIDNY") is the leading organization serving and representing people with disabilities in New York City. Our goal is to ensure full integration, independence and equal opportunity for all people with disabilities by removing barriers to the social, economic, cultural and civic life of the community. CIDNY assists people with disabilities to gain skills and obtain services they need to live independently in the community. CIDNY also advocates for fair and effective policies that ensure full and equal access for people with disabilities.

The Nursing Home Transition and Diversion Waiver (NHTD) is a program that ensures that persons with disabilities can access services at home in the community instead of being forced to live in institutions. The Center for Independence of the Disabled is the NHTD Regional Resource Development Center for New York City, responsible for helping people with disabilities and seniors avoid institutionalization or come out of nursing homes into their own homes with appropriate supports and services.

Today's Times describes the suicide of Ms. Schardt in Germany. She was depressed and distressed by her body becoming increasingly weak. She was socially isolated. There was no indication in the article if there were services available to enable her to stay in her apartment, she believed she was going to have to enter a nursing home. She thought death was preferable to that fate.

I am sick of the ethnic stereotyping that has gone on in the past few weeks. I am an old Jew for Obama. I used to live in Kentucky and I am sick of all the simple minded descriptions of people from there. It's a state that goes from the Appalachians to the Mississippi, coal, tobacco, bourbon, horses, big cities, fine universities. Its people are as diverse as the state, the majority may be white and Protestant but that doesn't tell you anything about the individual. After Obama does his tour of Florida I hope he will visit Kentucky.

Events for March and April

On Sun. March 9th, Anthony Purdy, classical guitarist, will perform music of Latin America at 1:00 PM at Jasa Van Cortlandt Senior Center. An ethnic lunch will be served at noon. This event is co-sponsored by DFTA, NYC Cultural Affairs and Bronx Council on the Arts. Suggested donation for lunch is $3.00.

Join us to visit the Metropolitan Museum's new 19th century galleries on Thurs. Mar. 13th at 9:15 AM. Lucy Degidon, art historian, will accompany the group. For reservations and further information, please call center office at 718-549-4700.

Celebrate St. Patrick's Day on Fri. Mar. 14th with Marilynn Seits, dynamic pianist and sing along leader, and a corned beef and cabbage lunch. Lunch will be served at 12:15 PM.

On Tues. March 18th, move into the Purim holiday spirit with Hagit Avnon, singer, and Tzvi Klein, keyboardist at Jasa Van Cortlandt Sr. Center. Enjoy a festive meal replete with hamantaschen at noon followed by Hagit's dazzling program of music, drama and dance from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. This event is co-sponsored by DFTA, NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs and Bronx Council on the Arts. Suggested donation for lunch is $3.00.

Filmmaker and cellist, Biana Kovic, will screen her acclaimed independent film VIRTUOSO at Jasa Van Cortlandt Senior Center on Thurs. Mar. 27th at 11:15 AM. This film chronicles the inspiring story of 89-yr old Matty Kahn who learns to play the cello for the first time.

Thurs. Apr. 10th, Tom Smith, the Sinatra singer who "sounds eerily like the original," will present his popular one man show: Broadway & Nightclub Sounds of New York at Jasa Van Cortlandt Senior Center. Mr. Smith is a master vocalist, pianist composer and bandleader. This event is co-sponsored by DFTA, NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs and Bronx Council on the Arts. Suggested donation for special lunch, served at 12 noon, is $3.00.

Yoed Nir, celebrated young cellist, and Anat, his accompanist, will perform a special Passover program on Thurs. April 24th at 1:00 PM. Yoed Nir, a musical prodigy, has represented Israel by performing with prestigious ensembles all over the world. This event is co-sponsored by DFTA, NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs and Bronx
